This Date In Padre Baseball - June 9

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

PADRES WIN 3RD IN A ROW

PADRES 5 REDS 1

Andy Ashby (8-4) fell 2 outs short of his 4th consecutive game, instead settling for 8 1/3 innings of 8 hit ball, allowing just one run and striking out 11. Manager Bruce Bochy, with the Padres up 5-1 in the 8th, allowed Ashby to hit for himself, and had no one warming in the pen. It was Ashby's to close. After striking out Barry Larkin, Willie Greene would single, prompting Trevor Hoffman to get warm. Bret  Boone would single on an 0-2 pitch, and the call to the pen would send Hoffman in to pursue his 18th consecutive save. 2 strikeouts later, and he would have it, and the Padres a third straight win.

The Padres broke open the tie game in the 7th on a single swing, a grand slam down the left field line by Greg Vaughn, his 22nd HR of the season.

News and Notes - Pete Smith was traded to the Baltimore Orioles for AA pitcher Eric Estes.
