This Date In Padre Baseball - June 20

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

GIANTS SNAP PADRES WIN STREAK

GIANTS 5 PADRES 2

Mark Langston (1-1), making his first start in 2 weeks, was shaky early, but pitched decently in the loss. The main problem was that Giant starter Shawn Estes (6-5) was wildly effective. He struck out 6, but also allowed 5 hits and 5 walks. The wildness kept the Padre hitters off balance all game, inducing 3 double plays, all 3 ending an inning for the Padres.

The game was still a close one in the 8th inning, with the Padres trailing 3-2. In the top of the 8th, the Padres finally put a rally together, placing the tying and tie-breaking run into scoring position on closer Robb Nen. Ken Caminiti would strike out and Wally Joyner, pinch hitting for Ruben Rivera, would ground weakly to second to end the threat.

Donne Wall would surrender 2 runs in the bottom half to put the game out of reach, and end the win streak at 11 games.

News and Notes - After the game the Padres completed a trade with the Boston Red Sox, sending Carlos Reyes, Mandy Romero in exchange for Jim Leyritz.
