THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

PADRES RALLY AGAIN FOR VICTORY

PADRES 4 REDS 2

The Padres broke a 2-2 tie in the 7th with some small ball, to win a tight ballgame with the Reds at the Q tonight.

Quilvio Veras would lay down a fantastic bunt to the left, not even drawing a throw, to open the 7th. Steve Finley would single to center, putting 2 on with no outs. The Reds would bring in Danny Graves to extinguish the Padre rally, but the Friars had other plans.

On a 2-1 pitch to Ruben Rivera, Veras and Finley would execute a double steal. Rivera would then walk to load the bases for Ken Caminiti. Caminiti, in a slump, but had singled earlier in the game, drove a ball to the warning track in left, easily scoring Veras to give the Padres a 3-2 lead.

With 1 out, Greg Vaughn came to the plate and drew a walk after falling behind 0-2. Bruce Bochy would call for a hit and run with the bases loaded, with Wally Joyner at the plate, and it paid off. Joyner hit a perfect double play grounder to the pitcher, but with everyone running with the pitch, Graves only option was to get Joyner at first, allowing Finley to score to extend the lead to 4-2.

Joey Hamilton (4-7) would pitch a scoreless 8th, turning it over to closer Trevor Hoffman for his 17th save of the year.

News and Notes - The scouting report said you could run on Red's catcher Ed Taubensee, and the Padres did, snatching 3 bases on the night.
