            THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

Padres 5 Expos 2

The Padres put together enough hits today to score a run in 5 consecutive innings to earn a split in the series.

Joey Hamilton (12-11) turned in another solid performance, striking out 5 over 6 innings, allowing 2 runs.

Padre thorn Vladimir Guerrero put the Expos on the board in the first with a RBI single to center.

Greg Vaughn responded in the 2nd inning with a lead-off home run, his 45th of the year. He would break the tie in the 3rd, with a RBI single of his own.

Wally Joyner and George Arias would add solo home runs later, providing some pop that has been missing the prior 2 games.

Trevor Hoffman pitched a perfect 9th for his 44th save of the year, tying him with Mark Davis for the Padre single season record.

News and Notes - The Padres acquire 1B/OF John Vander Wal for a player to be named later. The trade was finalized early in the morning, giving Vander Wal enough time to get to San Diego to make his Padre debut as a pinch hitter in the 8th. He flew out to deep left-center, just missing a home run.
