THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
Padres 5 Braves 1
Game 2 of the 3 game series between the top 2 teams in the NL saw a matchup of aces, with the Padres' Andy Ashby (16-6) defeating Greg Maddux (15-6).
Ashby gave up a first inning home run to Keith Lockhart, but then shut down the potent Braves offense from there. Randy Myers and Donner Wall kept the gates shut for the final 2 innings.
Ken Caminiti hit his 22nd home run in the 4th inning, with Tony Gwynn on board to take the lead for good.
Jim Leyritz pinch hit in the 7th and roped a single to center to score Ruben Rivera for the final run, and the first pinch hit by a Padre in nearly 2 weeks!
News and Notes - Manager Bruce Bochy said the team was going to be more aggressive on the basepaths to try and rattle Maddux, but it backfired, with 2 runners caught stealing and 2 base running blunders leading to outs.
