THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
Padres 3 Braves 1
In a matchup of the top 2 teams in the National League, this one didn't disappoint and went the Padres way.
Joey Hamilton (10-9) scattered 6 hits across 7 innings, allowing only one run. The bullpen did it's job the rest of the way, with Randy Myers and Dan Miceli splitting the 8th after Hamilton left 2 on, and Trevor Hoffman earned his 39th save with a 1-2-3 inning.
Steve Finley got the Padres on the board early with his 10th home run of the season in the 1st.
Knotted at 1 in the 4th, the Padres were gifted a run on an error by Chipper Jones allowing Ken Caminiti to score. In the 5th, Quilvio Veras, returning from injury, roped a double to center, scoring Carlos Hernandez for the insurance run.
News and Notes - Padres pull within 2 of the Braves for home field advantage.

GAME OF THE DATE
Game 116 2001 - Padres 6 @Pirates 2
When Tony Gwynn announced his retirement, the Padres had already played the Mets in New York, where I was living at the time, and I was upset that I was going to be able to see Mr. Padre one last time. So I scoured the calendar, and checked it against my crazy work schedule to see if I would get a chance. It turns out I did when a client cancelled my visit, freeing me up for a 6 hour drive to Pittsburgh.
In the weeks leading up to the game, Tony had not played regularly, only pinch hitting as his ailing knee kept him off the field. The day before, Tony started, but left in the 3rd inning, making even a pinch hit appearance unlikely.
I bough a ticket down on the field, on the right field line, just in case...and by the way, when you go alone, that is a great place to get a seat. Usually those seats are all season tickets, but for one person, there is often a spot.
I got to the park when it opened and soaked in the entire day. PNC park is amazing, with not a single poor view. I sat next to 2 brothers from Philadelphia who were on a 12 park road trip when the starting lineups were announced. And there it was, #19, batting 5th in RF.
In the 2nd inning, Tony roped a double to center, looking like I remember. He came around to score, looking a bit gimpy and I figured, that was it. That was the last I would see #19.
But out he trotted to right in the bottom half, and we screamed his name and he tipped his cap. It was awesome.
In the top of the 6th, Tony came up again, and blasted his last big league home run to deep center.
THE PITTSBURGH FANS GAVE HIM A STANDING OVATION.
I loved Tony. I miss Tony.
But as luck would have it, I got to see him play one last time in Arizona.
