This Date In Padre Baseball - August 20

  THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

Padres 2 Braves 0

The Padres pull back within a game of the NL leading Braves behind, who else, but Kevin Brown (16-4). He was not quite as sharp as his last start, only going 6 1/3 innings, allowing 8 hits, but allowing no runs and striking out 9. The Braves game plan was to make him throw pitches, and it worked, topping 100 pitches in the 6th inning.

The bullpen did their job however, with Trevor Hoffman closing it out for his 41st save of the season.

Offensive was early, with Wally Joyner doubling home Steve Finley in the first, and Chris Gomez hit his 4th home run of the year in the second.

News and Notes - Large crowd (43,730) in Atlanta made this feel like playoff baseball.
