This Date In Padre Baseball - August 19

 THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

Marlins 6 Padres 0

The Padres out hit the Marlins, but failed to get any runs across against Brian Meadows (10-9) and the Marlins bullpen.

Sterling Hitchcock (7-5) was not equal to the task, allowing 6 runs in 5 innings.

Despite having multiple runners on base each inning, the Padres still trailed 1-0 in the 5th. That is when the wheels fell off the bus, and Hitchock allowed 5 hits and Ed Giavanola had an error leading to 4 runs and a big 5-0 lead.

News and Notes - Padres are 1 for 9 with RISP, with the one hit an odd one. Quilvio Veras laced a single to center with Chris Gomez at second, but the ball was nearly caught by Marlins CF John Cangelosi, who popped up quickly after trapping it, forcing Gomez to stay at second.
