Jim Leyritz doubled home Steve Finley and Greg Vaughn in the top of the 10th inning, and Andy Sheets added a single to score Leyritz to lead the Padres to victory in a back-and-forth affair.
Andy Ashby had his worst outing of the year, allowing 10 hits that lead to 8 runs in 3 2/3 innings, but the offense spared him the loss.
Donne Wall blew the lead in the 8th, first by allowing a game-tying home run to Bob Hamelin, and then walked in the go ahead run, before finally being pulled from the game.
The Padres tied it up in the 9th, setting up Leyritz to be the hero.

The Padres defeat Houston 2–0 in one hour and 53 minutes in the fastest game ever played at Petco Park. Right-hander Jake Peavy allowed four hits and two walks with six strikeouts in a complete-game shutout while out-dueling Roger Clemens. Right-fielder Brian Giles was 2-for-3 with a triple and homer and drove in both runs.

- C Encarnacion,acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates via a trade on March 29, appeared only at AAA Las Vegas.
- RF/1B Guiel would go on to appear at AA Mobile and AAA Las Vegas from 1997-1999. Granted free agency after the 1999 season.

Traded Brad Kaufman (minors) and Jim Bruske to the New York Yankees. Received Shea Morenz (minors) and Ray Ricken (minors).
- P Kaufman, drafted by the Padres in the 16th round of the 1993 draft, was promoted up to AAA Las Vegas in 1998.
- P Bruske, acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers via a trade on July 23, appeared in 4 games during the 1998 season, bringing his Padre career total to 32 games over 2 seasons, posting a 4-1 record with a 3.66 ERA.
- OF Morenz would not make it beyond AAA Las Vegas before his release after the 1999 season.
