This Date In Padre Baseball - August 6

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

PHILLIES 3 PADRES 2 (11 INNINGS)

The Padre drop the series finale with the Phillies in a tight game  that took extra frames to decide on a sunny Thursday afternoon.

Tied at 2 after 4 innings, Padre starter Joey Hamilton and Phillie starter Mark Portugal settled into a pitcher's duel, but in quite different ways. After scuffling through 4 innings, Hamilton went 9 up 9 down over the last 3. Portugal took a more complicated approach, allowing at least 2 runners over the next 3 innings, but the Padres couldn't come up with the clutch hit.

The Phillies had the timely hitting in the 11th inning, off closer Trevor Hoffman (3-1), in the dreaded closer in a non-save situation AND pitching his second inning.

Scott Rolen led off with a double and came around to score on a Rico Brogna single.

News and Notes -  The Padres made a claim on Randy Myers, mainly as an effort to prevent him from joining the Braves, and now have an extra, albeit expensive arm at the back end of the bullpen.
