PADRES 3 PHILLIES 1

Sterling Hitchcock (5-4) bounced back from a string of subpar starts, striking out 8 over 6 innings, scattering 5 hits and allowing just one run.

Tony Gwynn remained hot, going 2 for 4, and driving in the first Padre run in the 1st inning. Ruben Rivera, seeing time in CF for Steve Finley, doubled home Wally Joyner for the second run in the 2nd inning.

Greg Vaughn slammed his 39th home run of the year in the 5th inning to extend the lead to 3-0.

Trevor Hoffman would close the door in the 9th, securing the victory and his 37th save of the year.

2000

Traded a player to be named later to the Philadelphia Phillies. Received Desi Relaford.
  •  IF Relaford would go on to appear in 45 games during the 2000 season, hitting .204 with a 2 HR and 16 RBI. Selected off waivers by the New York Mets  
2016

Signed Ronald Bolanos as an amateur free agent.
  •  P Bolanos would go on to make his MLB debut as a Padre on September 3, 2019. He would go on to appear in 5 games (3 starts) in 2019, posting a 0-2 record with a 5.95 ERA. Traded to the Kansas City Royals on July 16, 2020.
