This Date In Padre Baseball - August 29

          THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

Expos 3 Padres 1

The Padre 6 game win streak comes to an end thanks to the crafty pitching from former Padre Dustin Hermanson (12-10). Hermanson tossed a solid 7 2/3 innings before handing it over to Ugueth Urbana who earned his 27th save of the season.

Sterling Hitchcock (8-6) took the hard luck loss despite a career high 15 strikeouts. But 2 home runs, first to opposing starter Hermanson, and later to 1998 Padre Killer, Vladimir Guerrero, hitting his 35th of the season, and 3rd against the Padres this season.

The Padres only managed 3 hits, with Jim Leyritz hitting his 11th home run of the season, for the only run by the Friars.

News and Notes - The Padre offense occasionally goes dark, and with playoffs approaching, is a major concern for manager Bruce Bochy.

GAME OF THE DATE

Game 132 2001 - @Cardinals 16 Padres 14

Ryan Klesko is 5-for-6 with two doubles and two homers with five RBIs and four runs scored to tie a Padres record with 13 total bases in a single game as the Padres lose 16–14 in St. Louis. The 14 runs is the most ever scored by the Padres in a loss.

The Cardinals score two runs on a strikeout when runners, who are breaking from first and second, score after pinch-hitter Bobby Bonilla strikes out throwing his bat down the third-base line, causing the Padres third baseman Phil Nevin to duck to avoid being hit by the flying lumber. At the same time, catcher Ben Davis's throw, attempting to cut down the runner at an unmanned third base, goes into left field, which allows Edgar Renteria to score.

The Padres play the game under protest, but are denied.
