THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
Braves 5 Padres 0
With the lead for home field advantage on the line, Tom Glavine showed why is is the Cy Young favorite, winning his 16th game of the year, with a complete game 2 hit shutout.
Mark Langston (4-5) meanwhile pitched like someone who may not make the postseason roster, giving up 3 runs in 6 innings.
Chipper Jones added salt to the wound, with a 2 run shot of Scott Sanders in the 7th, putting a 3-0 lead to an insurmountable 5-0.
Not that Glavine needed any of it. Carrying a no-hitter into the 6th, before allowing the only 2 hits of the game on back-to-back pitches. But that was all the Padres could muster.
News and Notes - With the loss, the Padres fall 2 games back of the Braves, and don't look now, but the Astros are HOT and only trail the Padres by 3 games.
