1998 SEASON

PADRES PITCHING CRUMBLES IN OAKLAND

A'S 12 PADRES 10

Andy Ashby was average, and the bullpen got worse from there in a 12-10 shootout in Oakland. Ashby allowed 7 hits and 6 runs in just 5 innings, his shortest outing of the season. Only Donne Wall escaped unscathed, as Roberto Ramirez, Dan Miceli (7-3), and Trevor Hoffman were all lit up for runs.

The Padres held a brief lead in the second, after Greg Vaughn connected for his 27th home run of the season. Ashby would give up 3 runs in the bottom half, and the shootout was on.

In the 4th inning, down 4-1, Mark Sweeney would drive in Ken Caminiti to make the score a respectful 4-2. Carlos Hernandez would bring the Padres to within 1 run in the 7th, with a 2 run home run.  The combo of Ramirez and Miceli would give back those 2 runs in the bottom half, to make the score 8-5 Oakland.

Wally Joyner would tie the game in the 8th with his 3 run home run, and the scattered Friar faithful here in Oakland were thinking another late inning rally for the 1998 Padres!

Miceli would suffocate that dream in the 8th, loading the bases before Bruce Bochy called on Trevor Hoffman in the dreaded "closer in a tie game" scenario. And, Hoffman was terrible. 2 walks and a single later and the A's were back up 12-8.

Joyner would make it interesting in the 9th, driving a long single to score two. Ruben Rivera was sent in to pinch hit, then was caught stealing second to end the game.

News and Notes -   Bochy was livid at Rivera for the attempted steal. "It just wasn't a smart baseball play. Down 2 with 2 outs, you just can't kill your own rally like that."

WASHBURN FRUSTRATES PADRES

ANGELS 11 PADRES 3

Jarrod Washburn (4-0) was utterly hittable, allowing 8 hits across 7 innings, but the Padres couldn't string enough of them together to convert into runs.

Meanwhile, Joey Hamilton (5-9) was equally average, allowing 8 hits himself. He unfortunately also allowed 3 walks, and 1 home run in giving up 6 runs in 6 2/3 innings. The bullpen just got worse from there, allowing 5 more runs before the 7th was over.

The only Padre driving in runs today was Andy Sheets, going 2 for 5 with all 3 Padres' RBI.

News and Notes -  Padre hitters were extremely impatient at the plate today, drawing zero walks, and only getting Washburn to a 3 ball count once....with the loss and a Brave victory, the two teams are once again tied for the best record in the National League.
