1998 SEASON
OFFENSE FAILS HITCHCOCK IN TEXAS
RANGERS 3 PADRES 0
Sterling Hitchcock (3-1) probably pitched well enough to win, making 2 mistakes on the night, leading to 3 runs. The Padre offense was ineffective against a previously scuffling John Burkett.
The Padres would get 6 hits, but only one was an extra base hit, a tripe by Ed Giovanola in the 9th, left stranded when Carlos Hernandez would look at a called strike 3 to end the game.
The first inning set the table for the kind of night it was going to be for the Padres. Quilvio Veras led off with a sharp single, but was thrown out by Ivan Rodriguez on the steal attempt. Steve Finley would hit a deep fly ball, caught at the wall, just missing. Tony Gwynn would reach on the first of 3 Ranger errors, but would be out number 3 as the force out on second by a weak grounder from Greg Vaughn. This was the best chance of runs until the triple in the 9th.
News and Notes - With the loss, the Padres fall out of first place for the first time since April 5.

What's worse than losing in extra innings? How about being in attendance...and watching not one, but 2 comebacks...just to lose!
That's what I saw at the Q that Friday night. on a Gary Matthews double to score 2 and a pinch hit double by Ryan Klesko to tie the game. In the top of the 10th, Jessie Orosco would cough up a run. But the Padres would again tie the game, this time on a wild pitch. Rod Beck would come in the 11th and surrender the winning runs.
