1998 SEASON
PADRES REGAIN 1ST PLACE, BLAST GIANTS
The Padres extended their winning streak to five games AND regained sole possession of first place in the NL West with a 10-3 victory at the Q.
A massive crowd of 60,789 saw the Padres come back from a 3-0 deficit to tie it in the 7th. A huge 7 run 8th inning blew the game open.
Sterling Hitchcock allowed 3 runs in 6 inning, with all 3 coming on home runs (Rey Sanchex solo shot and a Barry Bonds 2 run homer.) The Padres offense started showing up late, with their first run of the night coming in the 5th inning on a solo home run from Carlos Hernandez.
Tony Gwynn, pinch hitting for Carlos Hernandez in the 6th, would score Ruben Rivera on a sacrifice fly, bringing the Padres to within 1 run. In the bottom of the 7th, Ken Caminiti would smash a double down the right field line, scoring Quilvio Veras to tie the game.
The 8th inning outburst started with Veras driving in Chris Gomez with the go ahead run, but it didn't stop there. Greg Vaughn would double in Mandy Romero to make it 5-3 Padres. Wally Joyner would single home Veras and Vaughn after Caminiti was walked intentionally to extend the lead to 7-3. Ruben Rivera would then smoke a ball into the left field stands, much to the appreciation of the home crowd, cheering on their first place Padres after a 10-3 victory.
News and Notes - Roberto Ramirez makes MLB debut in the 7th inning, getting 4 straight outs.

GAME OF THE DATE
Game 62 1970 - Pirates 2 Padres 0 (1st game of doubleheader)
Pittsburgh’s Dock Ellis throws the first no-hitter against the Padres in 2–0 Pirates win at San Diego Stadium.
Although there’s no way to prove this fact without toxicology reports from all of the other no-hitters, it is quite likely that Dock Ellis’ June 12, 1970 no-no marks the only one thrown by a pitcher who was tripping on LSD. The Pirates started thought the team had a day off and decided to drop a few tabs before realizing that Pittsburgh had a doubleheader and he was scheduled to pitch Game 1. The win apparently wasn’t pretty, as Ellis walked eight and hit at least one batter, noting he couldn’t see the batter.
