Sterling Hitchcock (3-0) was sharp again, tossing 6 1/3 innings, allowing only 2 solo shots, then turning the ball over to Donne Wall then to closer Trevor Hoffman for his 16th straight save.

Chris Gomez was the early hero for the Padres, hitting a solo home run in the 2nd and again in the 4th to respond to the Cardinals solo shots, tying the game each time.

In the 5th, Tony Gwynn led off with a double, and move to third on a single by Ken Caminiti. Todd Stottlemyre (6-5)would strike out Greg Vaughn before Wally Joyner roped a 3-2 pitch to left field, scoring Gwynn to break the tie.



News and Notes - Carlos Hernandez was hit by a pitch for a team leading 5th time in the 8th inning.
