THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

HITCHCOCK FLIRTS WITH HISTORY

PADRES 5 ANGELS 1

Left-hander Sterling Hitchcock (4-1) takes a no-hitter into the eighth when Angels’ catcher Phil Nevin homers on the first pitch of the inning. Hitchcock allows one run on two hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in a complete game as the Padres win 5–1 at Qualcomm Stadium.

Greg Vaughn hit his 26th home run of the season to lead off the second inning and give Hitchcock an early 1-0 lead. With Hitchcock cruising along, the Padres bats were a little sleepy until the 6th, when a few hits, all with 2 outs, scored 2 more runs to extend the lead to 3-0.

Tony Gwynn would double home Chris Gomez in the 7th, making it 4-0.

After Nevin ruined history for the Padres in the 8th, Ed Giovanola hit his first home run of the season to give the Padres a final of 5-1.

News and Notes - C Jim Leyritz took the blame for the Nevin home run, saying " I just blew that call right there. Hitch was going to get that no hitter if I make a better call."
