THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
PADRES SWEEP RED, WIN 4TH IN A ROW
PADRES 2 REDS 1
Kevin Brown (6-3) once again has an early inning hiccup, allowing 3 of his 9 hits in the 2nd inning, allowing a run. And, again, he locked down the bats after that, striking out 10 in a complete game victory.
Until the 6th inning however, it looked like the Padre bats would again fail Brown, but Ken Caminti evened the game with his 8th home run of the season.
Tied up in the 8th, the Padres finally got multiple hits in an inning, and with an assist from an errant throw by Jeff Shaw, Wally Joyner was able to drive in Quilvio Veras with the tie-breaking run.
News and Notes - It's a rare game when the winning team has less hits than the opponent, and scores as many runs as they commit errors, but that is exactly what happened tonight.

GAME OF THE DATE
Game 63 1974 - Padres 9 Pirates 8
The Padres rally for 9 runs in the final 2 innings to come all the way back from an 8-0 deficit.
My parents went to this game and it imprinted on them, and passed along to us kids, that you NEVER leave a game early.
The big blow in the 8th was a 3 run home run by Cito Gaston. In the 9th, Dave Winfield hit a solo home run to make it 8-5. 2 walks later, and the Pirates suddenly need closer Kent Tekulve to come in, but the Padres momentum was too much tonight, and a two-out single by Derrel Thomas made it 8-5. Bob Barton would then single and 2 more would score. Horace Clarke would finish off the rally, with another single to win 9-8.
