BROWN FALTERS IN RETURN TO TEXAS
RANGERS 8 PADRES 7
Kevin Brown had a poor outing in his return to face his former team. Throwing 100 pitches only got him through 5 innings, allowing 11 hits, 4 walks, and 6 runs. He would get no decision thanks to 2 runs in the 6th to tie the game.
Donne Wall (2-2) would face similar problems, allowing 2 runs in 2 innings to take the loss. He allowed a long home run to Juan Gonzales on his second pitch in the 6th inning.
The Padres would rally again for a run in the 7th to tie the game again, but a walk, a wild pitch and a Fernando Tatis single later and Wall and the Padres would fall behind for the final time, 8-7.
The Padres banged out 13 hits, but went 4 for 16 with runners in scoring position.
News and Notes - Moving Steve Finley down the order paid off today, 2 for 5 and 1 RBI

PADRES FRANCHISE RECORD ON THIS DATE = 21-23 .477
Game 54 1973 - @Cardinals 5 Padres 3
The outcome of the game is not important, the MLB amateur draft is the story. The Padres draft outfielder Dave Winfield from the University of Minnesota with the fourth overall pick of the first round. Winfield reports directly to the Padres and never spends a day in the minor leagues.
Game 48 1976 - Padres 11 @Pirates 9

Game 57 1979 - Padres 11 @Cubs 3
The Padres set a season high for runs scored in a game, one that will be tied on July 7.
Game 52 1984 - Padres 3 Astros 0
Right-hander Andy Hawkins pitches a complete-game, three hit-shutout with four walks as the Padres defeat Houston 3–0 for a fifth straight win to pull to within a half-game of the National League West lead.

Phil Clark singles home Ray Holbert for the 200th walk off win franchise history.
GAME OF THE DATE
Game 52 1986 - Braves 4 Padres 2
In the bottom of the 3rd inning, 3 things happened, one quite rare, and the other 2? Both a once in a lifetime event.
The rare occurrence was a triple play turned by the Braves on a Kevin McReynolds' grounder. Then, something never seen before, nor since happened.
Steve Garvey was ejected from the game!
Garvey, the on-deck batter, went out to dispute the call. Manager Steve Boros also went out.
Garvey said he told Umpire Williams "We've got to bear down" and he was ejected after pointing to home plate where Bip Roberts safely (according to replays) touched home plate.
Williams thought otherwise, first that Roberts missed the plate, and second, that Garvey was showing him up at the plate, drawing pictures in the dirt.
Boros would soon join Garvey in the clubhouse.
The other "once in a lifetime " event? Bruce Bochy stole second base in the second inning, for his only stolen base of his career. Clearly this set off the baseball gods and created the 3rd inning oddness.
