KEVIN BROWN PAVES WAY TO VICTORY
PADRES 5 GIANTS 1
Kevin Brown (8-3) fell one out short of a complete game, but Trevor Hoffman closed out the Giants for his 22nd consecutive save.
The big inning for the Padres offense was in the 3rd of starter Orel Hershisher (6-5). Quilvio Veras drew a walk, then Steve Finley had an 8 pitch at bat, ending with a triple to right, scoring Veras. Tony Gwynn would double home Finley, and then score on a single from Carlos Hernandez to make the score 4-0.
Brown was a bulldog on the mound again, allowing 7 hits, walking one and striking out 9.
News and Notes - Due to some travel complications, the Padres were 2 men short today, as newly acquired Jim Leyritz plane was delayed, so he will join the team tomorrow in Seattle. Will Cunnane, called up to replace the traded Carlos Reyes, will also join the team in Seattle, as the decision on who to call up occurred after the last flight out of Oklahoma City had passed (Las Vegas Stars were in Oklahama City that night)
