This Date In Padre Baseball - June 3

THIS DATE IN PADRES BASEBALL

1998 SEASON
5 RUN 7TH DOOMS PADRES

ASTROS 8 PADRES 2

Wait, isn't that a repeat from yesterday...well no...it's worse.

After a 3 run 7th inning ruined the Tuesday night game, a 5 run 7th tonight put a close 3-2 game out of reach for the Padres.

Down 3-1, Greg Vaughn would launch his 19th home run into the Qualcomm stands to make the game 3-2 in the 6th inning.

Unable to get to Joey Hamilton's spot in the order in the 6th, manager Bruce Bochy would send Hamilton back out for the 7th inning. Quickly running into trouble, allowing a run to score and leaving 2 men on base for Brian Boehringer, who would be asked to intentionally walk Jeff Bagwell and concede the ball to Pete Smith. Smith would come undone with 2 walks and a wild pitch, eventually allowing 3 more runs to score, giving the Astros a 6 run lead

News and Notes -  With the loss, the Padres drop behind the NL central leading Astros for the #2 seed in the National League.

Game 56 2016 - Padres 4 Rockies 0

GAME OF THE DATE

Game 35 1995 - Expos 1 Padres 0 (10 innings)

Montreal’s Pedro Martinez pitches nine perfect innings against the Padres at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium before Bip Roberts doubles to lead off the bottom of the 10th in the Expos’ 2–1 win.

Even though the ball from that game is featured in the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s “No-Nos and Perfectos” exhibit., Martinez would not be credited with a no-hitter due to the updated definition of a no-hitter in 1991. Martinez’s near-perfect game is one of 12 performances by pitchers who threw nine innings of no-hit ball only to yield a hit in extra innings

Martinez threw nine innings of perfect ball against the Padres, but his Expos couldn’t score a run so it headed for extra innings. The Expos managed to bring a runner home in the top of the tenth, but Martinez gave up a lead-off double in the bottom half of the inning and Mel Rojas was brought in to retire the final three batters.
