This Date In Padre Baseball - June 4

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON
ASHBY CONTINUES HOT STREAK, PADRES WIN

PADRES  5 ASTROS 1

Andy Ashby (7-4) allows a run on eight hits and four walks with eight strikeouts in a 5–1 win over Houston at Qualcomm Stadium. It is the third straight complete game pitched by Ashby.

Spotted a 2 run lead in the first, after Greg Vaughn's 20th home run of the season with Quilvio Veras aboard, Ashby set to work on keeping the Astros guessing.

Only a Moises Alou home run in the 9th prevented Ashby for getting the shut out and ending his brief scoreless inning streak at 14.

News and Notes -  With his 20th home run in the Padres 60th game, Vaughn is on a pace to smash the franchise record for home runs in a season, just set 2 years ago by teammate Ken Caminiti with 40 in 1996.

Notable games of June 4

PADRES FRANCHISE RECORD ON THIS DATE = 21-22 .409

Game 61 2008 - Padres 2 Cubs 1 - start of a season long, yet brief 5 game winning streak.

Game 57 2016 - Padres 4 Rockies 3

The Padres won the game, but the news of the day was the trade of right-handed starting pitcher James Shields to the Chicago White Sox for right-handed pitcher Erik Johnson and 17-year-old infielder Fernando Tatis Jr. The news was HUGE at the time because it signaled the start of the end of GM AJ Preller's superstar experiment. The news gets bigger each year as the 17 year old Tatis developed into El Niño!

GAME OF THE DATE

Center fielder Steve Finley is 3-for-5 with a double, triple and a homer for four RBIs in a 7–5 Padres win at Coors Field in Colorado. With a chance at the first cycle in franchise history, Finley would pop-up to shallow center field in the 9th.
