This Date In Padre Baseball - June 17

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

WALLY WINS IT IN 12!

PADRES 3 DODGERS 2  (12 innings)

Quilvio Veras led off the first with his second home run of the year to spot Sterling Hitchcock an early 1-0 lead. That lead would not last long as Hitchcock left one in the zone, and Juan Castro made him pay, with a 2 run home run to take the lead in the second inning.

But that lead wouldn't last long either, as Chris Gomez doubled home Carlos Hernandez to tie the game at 2 after 2 innings. And that would be the score for awhile, as both Hitchcock and Dodger starter, Ismael Valdez, settled in for a battle. One that would extend into both bullpens and into extra frames.

Neither team threatened, with only 4 hits total by both teams until the 11th. Trevor Hoffman (3-0), in the dreaded "closer in a non-save" situation gave the crowd some anxious moments. A lead off single, then a sacrifice to move the runner over led to a showdown with former Padre, Gary Sheffield. Bruce Bochy wanted none of that, and put if on. Trevor worked himself out of the jam.

In the 12th, Greg Vaughn would single, and for the first time in 10 innings....another hit. This one, a lazy single to center field, that would scoot under the glove of Roger Cedeno and roll all the way to the track. Vaughn would huff and puff his way all the way around to score with an exhausted slide at home plate for the win!
