ASHBY SOLID, VERAS HOME RUN LEADS PADRES TO SWEEP!

Andy Ashby (9-4) pitched a solid 7 1/3 innings, and Quilvio Veras supplied the power with a a solo home run in the 6th to break a 1-1 tie. Struggling James Mouton, pinch hitting for Mark Sweeney, singled home Ken Caminiti for a much needed insurance run.

Trevor Hoffman would earn his 20th consecutive save, but was touched up for 3 hits and a run before inducing a perfect ground ball from Rey Sanchez for a game ending 4-6-3 double play. Padres win streak now at 7 games.

  
News and Notes - With a 2 run lead, Hoffman went right after Barry Bonds to lead off the 9th, striking him out on 3 pitches.
