1998 SEASON
LATE OFFENSIVE OUTBURST LEADS TO BIG VICTORY
PADRES 17 RANGERS 8
A day after the offense failed to score, the bottled up frustration finally erupted for 6 runs early, and then in a tie ballgame, added 11 more in the final 2 frames to blow out the Rangers.
The Padres got started early, with Greg Vaughn doubling home Steve Finley in the first, for a quick 1-0 lead. A throwing error by new catcher ,Mandy Romero (recalled before the game, sending Greg Myers to AAA), allowed the tying run to score in the bottom of the first.
Down 3-2 in the fifth inning, the Padres tied it up on a RBI double from Finley, then took a 3 run lead on Vaughn's 21st home run of the season. Starter Mark Langston ran out of gas in the 6th, replaced by Carlos Reyes who gave up a game tying 3-run home run to old National League nemesis, Will Clark in the 7th.
In the 8th inning, Texas relief pitcher Danny Patterson (1-2) would have an afternoon he would like to forget. He faced 5 Padres, allowing 1 hit and walking 4. All 5 would score in what turned into a 6 run 8th inning for the Padres.
Tacking on 5 more runs in the 9th, the Padres offense had it's biggest outburst of the season, collecting 15 hits and 9 walks.
News and Notes - Bochy had Trevor Hoffman throw the 9th, since he hadn't pitched in a week, and it looked like it, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs.
