THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

ASHBY LOSES DUEL WITH JOHNSON

Mariners 2 Padres 1

It is a really good thing that Randy Johnson (7-6) pitches in the American League, as he was dominant in going the distance in a sloppy game from both teams.

Johnson struck out 12, allowing only a Carlos Hernandez home run in the 9th to spoil the shut out. Andy Ashby (10-5) was hurt by an error by SS Andy Sheets in the 5th on a Randy Johnson grounder. Instead of ending the 5th still tied at zero, Ashby gave up a single to Alex Rodriguez to score Johnson with the first run.

Working around 3 errors by his defense, Johnson was masterful, and luckily for him, Ken Griffey Jr would hit a home run in the top of the 9th off Roberto Ramirez for a much needed insurance run.

News and Notes -  Wally Joyner was a late scratch, with Jim Leyritz taking over at first.

Game 72 1993 - Reds 6 Padres 4

Fittingly, the Padres lost this game because the didn't have a true closer, with Gene Harris doing his best impression of one, but he didn't get the job done today.

Before the game, it was announced that the Padres and Marlins made a trade. As part of the Padres’ “fire sale,” relief pitcher Trevor Hoffman is obtained in a trade that sends 1992 National League batting champion Gary Sheffield to the Florida Marlins.
