This Date In Padre Baseball - June 26

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

BROWN LEADS PADRES TO VICTORY

PADRES 6 ANGELS 3

Kevin Brown (9-3) didn't have any first inning issues this time, and had just one poor inning, allowing a double, a walk, then a 3 run HR to Cecil Fielder in the 4th.

Fortunately, the Padres offense responded. First, Ken Caminiti knocked the first pitch he saw in the 4th over the wall at the Q, and Kevin Brown helped himself, driving in Wally Joyner with a 2 out single. to cut the lead to 3-2.

Greg Vaughn would tie things up in the 5th, doubling home Caminiti. In the 6th, the Padres would load the bases, chasing starter Jason Dickson (8-5). Mike Holtz wouldn't stop the Padre momentum, first allowing a sacrifice fly by Steve Finley to break the tie. After walking Tony Gwynn, Caminiti would ground in what should have been an easy double play, but second baseman Justin Baughman's throw to the plate to get Brown would sail over the head of catcher Matt Walbeck. Vaughn would ground out , scoring Ed Giavanola for the last Padre run.

News and Notes -  Padre victory, combined with Braves loss puts the Padres 1 game ahead in the race for home field advantage.
