THIS DATE IN PADRES BASEBALL

1998 SEASON
PADRES STRIKE EARLY IN VICTORY

PADRES 7 CARDINALS 3

Maybe Kevin Brown (5-3) should start in the 2nd inning! For the 4 consecutive start, Brown gives up multiple runs in the first, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits. Then, he goes on lock down mode, and allows only 2 hits in the next seven innings to earn the win.

Down by 3 to start the game, the Padres offense got one back quickly. Back to back doubles by Steve Finley and Tony Gwynn would score Finley for the first run. But it was the second inning that the damage was done to Cardinals starter Sean Lowe. 4 hits, 2 walks, and 4 runs later, and Lowe's night was done.  Gwynn had the big blow, his second double of the night to score Chris Gomez and Finley to make it 5-3 Padres.

Brown was on cruise control from there, striking out 8, and setting down 13 in a row at one point. Wally Joyner and Mark Sweeney would each add an RBI in the 8th to extend the lead to 7-3.

News and Notes - Steve Finley would double off Ray Lankford in the 6th inning after a diving catch on a line drive to the gap in right center. Finley made the dive, and knowing he caught it, jumped up and threw to Joyner at first to catch a stunned Lankford midway to second.
