This Date In Padres Baseball - May 5

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON
PADRES REPEAT BAKER'S DOZEN

PADRES 13 BREWERS 4

Back to back nights with 13 runs is just fine for pitching coach Dave Stewart and the Padres pitching staff. Especially when the runs come early and often, with 7 runs in the first 2 innings, making it an easy night for Pete Smith (3-2). "I joked with Sterling after the game yesterday that he got my 13 runs. I guess the rest of the guys heard me!"

For certain Wally Joyner and Andy Sheets did. Joyner, no longer looking frail from his flu, hit a grand slam in the second inning off starter Paul Wagner (1-3) on his way to a 5 RBI night, and Sheets, proving last night was no fluke, went 2 for 4 with a 3 run home run in the 5th.

After Smith went 5 innings, Donne Wall pitched 2 scoreless, looking sharp. Then Bochy, doing what he loves to, immediately gave newest Padre Ben VanRyn his shot. VanRyn walked 2 and struck out one, looking every bit his reputation as a strong arm that needs to figure out control.

Brian Boehringer would have a rough 9th, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits before final securing the victory.

News and Notes - Van Ryn was acquired from the Chicago Cubs today, with Don Wengert going to the Cubs. Wengert ironically had his best performance last night, allowing 0 runs over 4 innings, earning his only save as a Padre.
