BREWERS WALK OFF PADRES IN FINALE
BREWERS 3 PADRES 2
BREWERS 3 PADRES 2
With ace Kevin Brown cruising in a scoreless game, manager Bruce Bochy wasn't really thinking about his bullpen. In the 8th, Carlos Hernandez doubled off the left field wall, Archi Cianfrocco laid down a wonderful bunt to move Hernandez over to third. Chris Gomez then didn't chase anything in the classic unintentional intentional walk to put Padres on the corners with 1 out and Brown due up.
Brown, a decent hitter, had his blister burst on his index finger in the 7th, and needed to be pinch hit for. Eddie Williams was called upon, and delivered, singling to center to break the tie and put the Padres up 1-0. Williams would promptly get picked off and pinch-hitter Steve Finley would strike out to end the rally.
With Trevor Hoffman unavailable, fighting a stomach bug, Bochy turned to Dan Miceli, who floundered for the first time this season, struggled to throw strikes, allowed one hit, threw a wild pitch, and was fortunate to get 2 outs. Newly acquired Ben VanRyn was brought in to face Jeremy Burnitz, who singled home the tying run. Another single, and Bochy had seen enough of VanRyn and called in Carlos Reyes. Reyes fared no better, giving up a single to Darrin Jackson to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead.
In typical 1998 Padres fashion, the offense wasn't done. Tony Gwynn would hit a game-tying home run, his 4th of the year off closer Doug Jones.
Mark Loretta would double in the bottom of the 9th off Carlos Reyes to walk-off a victory for the hometown Brewers.
News and Notes - Released Archie Corbin. Also Traded a player to be named later to the Detroit Tigers. Received Scott Sanders.
