This Date In Padres Baseball - May 24

THIS DATE IN PADRES BASEBALL

1998 SEASON
ASTROS WIN TO TAKE SERIES IN HOUSTON

ASTROS 5 PADRES 2

Joey Hamilton (3-5) didn't get enough offense to overcome a Ken Caminiti error in the 5th that lead to 3 runs.

A triple by Bill Spiers in the 7th, scoring 2, would close the book on Hamilton, and be the final score, 5-2.

The Padres scored both of their runs in the 4th, on singles by Caminiti and Carlos Hernandez. The Padres would ground into 3 inning ending double plays the rest of the game to keep their run total at 2

News and Notes -  Tony Gwynn sat out a second straight game, his knee not happy about the hard Astroturf.

GAME OF THE DATE

Game 44 1969 - Cubs 7 Padres 5

Second baseman Johnny Sipin sets a Padres record when he hits two triples in the 44th game in franchise history. The record has been tied 14 times since, but never broken and remains the oldest record in the Padres record book. Sipin also tied a MLB record by getting those 2 triple in his MLB debut, tying Ed Irwin (1912), Roy Weatherly (1936), and Willie McCovey (1959)

Sipin hit the first triple in his first MLB at bat against Ken Holtzman. In his second at bat, also against Holtzman, he would triple again, becoming the only player in MLB history to start his career with consecutive triples. He would never hit another triple in his career.
