THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
PADRES LOSE
Marlins 1 Padres 0
Marlins 1 Padres 0
After a slug fest the previous night, pitchers ruled today. Jesus Sanchez (1-1) out-dueled Andy Ashby (4-2) , allowing only 4 hits to Ashby's 7. Two singles and a fielder's choice scored the only run of the game in the second inning.
The Padres would load the bases in the 3rd, but Sanchez got Greg Vaughn to line out to left to end the threat. Only twice more would they get a runner to second.
Tony Gwynn, resting his knee the day game after a night game, came in to pinch hit in the 9th, and missed tying the game by a few feet, with Cliff Floyd making the catch at the top of the fence.
News and Notes - Bochy says that Pete Smith will get pushed back a day, and will start Tuesday instead of tomorrow. Candidates for the start tomorrow include Sterling Hitchcock, or calling up one of the 3 prospects from AAA Las Vegas
