THIS DATE IN PADRES BASEBALL

1998 SEASON
PADRES LEAVE BATS IN SAN DIEGO

PIRATES 3 PADRES 0

The Padres were no match for Jose Silva (5-3) tonight, the young right-hander was in complete control, allowing only 4 hits over eight innings, and Ricardo Rincon and Rich Loiselle closed out the 9th for the Pirate victory.

Joey Hamilton (3-4) was the tough luck loser, only giving up 2 runs over 7 innings to take the loss.

The Padres only got 3 runners into scoring position all night, with their best chance in the 9th, when Tony Gwynn hits a double for his second hit of the night with only one out. Wally Joyner would strike out, and closer Loiselle would induce a weak ground ball from Greg Vaughn to end the game.

News and Notes -  Tony said his knee was feeling real good today, and it showed, with his second stolen base of the season, and his double coming on aggressive base running.
