This Date In Padres Baseball - May 10

THIS DATE IN PADRES BASEBALL

1998 SEASON
BRAVES BATS TOO MUCH FOR PADRES, TAKE 3 OF 4

BRAVES 8 PADRES 5

The Padres drop 3 of 4 in Atlanta, leaving the Braves as the cream of the NL crop. Manager Bruce Bochy in his post-game presser "Atlanta has been the best team in the NL, heck , all of baseball for the past few years. No surprise that they do it all, clutch hitting and powerful pitching, and deep bullpen. But, it's May. We have some time to improve the things that were missing from this series."

Missing today, again, a lock down starting performance AND a leaky bullpen. Pete Smith was spotted an early 3-0 lead, thanks to a lead-off double by Steve Finley, coming around to score on a fielder's choice. 2 more runs were added in the 4th on RBI singles by Carlos Hernandez and Andy Sheets.

Braves sluggers Andres Galaragga and Andruw Jones would both hit 2-run HR to bring the Braves the lead at 5-3. Once again, the Padres would rally, with Tony Gwynn driving home Finley in the 5th and Ed Giovanola smashing a drive down the line for a triple in the 6th to score Sheets to tie the game at 5.

Once again the Padre bullpen would falter, this time it was Donne Wall, first allowing a home run to Javy Lopez in the 6th, and then a 2 run shot to Ryan Klesko in the 7th to bring the final score of 8-5.

News and Notes -  Quilvio Veras was back, albeit in a pinch hitting role in the 9th.
