This Date In Padres Baseball - May 8

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON
ACES BATTLE AS PADRES DEFEAT BRAVES

PADRES 3 BRAVES 2

Once again, the Padres struck first, in the first, scoring 2. The first off the bat of Tony Gwynn, a long home run to deep center field of Tom Glavine (4-2) to make it 1-0. A double by Greg Vaughn and a RBI single by Wally Joyner made it 2-0 Padres before the tomahawk chopping fans had settled in their seats.

Andy Ashby (5-2) was stellar with men on base. He gave up 9 hits and walked 2, but stranded 9 of them. In the 3rd, Vaughn hit his second double of the game, this one scoring Chris Gomez to make it 3-0 Padres. Ashby gave one back in the 4th, to his opponent, Glavine, continuing the theme of good hitting from the Braves pitching staff, who singled home Michael Tucker to edge the Braves closer, 3-1.

With Glavine now locked in, Ashby has his work cut out for him, and they each mowed down whoever stepped into the batter's box, until Andres Galarraga brought the Braves to within 1 with his 12th home run of the year.

Trevor Hoffman came out in the 9th, and 3 consecutive pop flys later, secured the Padre victory and his 9th save of the season.

News and Notes -  Ken Caminiti began his rehab back in San Diego, still likely a week away from rejoining the team.
