PADRES WALK OFF WIN!
PADRES 3 PHILLIES 2
Once again these Padres rally for a victory! This time with 2 in the ninth, in a not straightforward way, to may Carlos Reyes (2-1) the winner after another solid Kevin Brown outing.
Down 2-0 after the 3rd, in what is becoming a typical Brown start, the Padres offense could not get going against the trio of Phillies, Matt Beech, Yorkis Perez, and Wayne Gomes. In the 6th, after a couple of walks and a double by Wally Joyner, the Padres finally got on the board, down 2-1. It took facing the closer Mark Leiter to rally the offense.
Ruben Rivera, making his season debut, led of with a walk. Chris Gomez was hit for the 4th time this season to put the winning run on base. Bruce Bochy chose to go with Ed Giavanola as the pinch hitter, and asked him to lay down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over. Giavanola laid down an effective bunt, then the fun began as Leiter fielded the bunt, and with no chance at Rivera, threw high to first and down the right field line, allowing Rivera to score and sending Gomez to third.
Quilvio Veras was then intentionally walked to load the bases for Andy Sheets, having a rough night with 3 strikeouts. Bochy decided to pinch hit with Greg Myers, hoping for a sacrifice fly and avoiding the dreaded double play.
Myers delivered with a single to left, scoring Gomez to win the game for the Padres!
News and Notes - Rivera was called up to replace the struggling James Mouton, who was sent to Las Vegas to find his swing.
