PADRES 13 BREWERS 5
Sterling Hitchcock (1-0), making a spot start, wasn't sharp, but he didn't need to be thanks to 12 run lead by the bottom of the 4th inning. The offense racked up 18 hits, with 6 players, including Hitchcock collecting multiple hits. The big offensive hero was Andy Sheets, an early game substitution for the gimpy Quilvio Veras. Veras walked to lead off the game against Jose Mercedes (2-2), then stole second. It was on the steal that he appeared hurt, but he insisted on staying in the game. Steve Finley's deep out to center moved Veras to third. Tony Gwynn would slap a single to right to score Veras.
Veras wouldn't come out to take his place in the field, instead Ed Giavonola would move from 3B to 2B and Andy Sheets would take over at the hot corner. But it was Sheets who was hot, going 3 for 5, scoring twice and driving in 4, including 3 on his 3rd home run of the season.
The Padres would put up 3,4,and 4 in the next 3 innings with big hits up and down the lineup. Sterling Hitchcock had 2 hits and 2 RBI's himself. Along with Sheets, Gwynn and Carlos Hernandez had 3 hits.
Despite the big lead, Hitchcock's day was done after 5, with a pitch count at 97. Don Wengert would pitch 4 scoreless innings for an old school save, his first of the season.
News and Notes - After the game, Bochy and the training staff confirmed a slight groin pull, and Veras will likely head to the disabled list.
