BROWN STOPS PADRE LOSING STREAK AT 2
PADRES 2 METS 1
Kevin Brown (3-2) pitched 8 strong innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out 6 and Trevor Hoffman pitched a perfect 9th for his 10th save of the season in as many attempts.
Brown allowed his only run in the second inning after back to back singles were followed by consecutive fielder's choices to move the runners around the diamond, station to station. The Met 1-0 lead wouldn't last long, with the Padres tying the game in the bottom half of the inning on double by Archi Cianfrocco scoring Greg Vaughn who doubled to lead off the inning of ERA leader Al Leiter (3-2).
Leiter and Brown would match zeroes until the 8th inning, when the Padres had another late inning 2-out rally. Started by a Tony Gwynn single on the first pitch thrown by Leiter, followed by a four pitch walk to Vaughn, really never giving him anything near the zone to swing at, bringing up Wally Joyner. On a 1-2 count, Joyner got just enough of a nasty slider to pop it into left field, and with 2 outs, Gwynn was running on contact and made a great slide at home to avoid the tag and score, making it 2-1 Padres.
Hoffman would get 3 pop flys to secure the victory.
News and Notes - Despite leading the league in ERA at 1.21 entering the game, the Padres scouts laid the plan of attack. Bochy said " he is effectively wild. If we what for our chances, we can get to him." Proving prescient, Leiter walked 3 and hit a batter, his 5th of the young season.
