STERLING SHINES BUT BULLPEN FALTERS IN LOSS TO ATLANTA
BRAVES 6 PADRES 4
Sterling Hitchcock sparkled in the starters role, tossing 5 1/3 innings, surrendering 4 hits, walking 2 but allowing no runs. Lifted in the 6th after a single by Chipper Jones, Brian Boehringer got the next 2 batters to preserve a 3-0 Padre lead. All of the Padres runs had come via the long ball. First a 2-run shot by Greg Vaughn, followed by Greg Myers' first of the year.
The Padre bullpen would stumble hard in the 7th inning. After Boehringer struck out Andruw Jones, Gerald Williams would double. Bruce Bochy would call upon Ben VanRyn (0-1) to get Danny Bautista out, but Bobby Cox would pinch hit with Michael Tucker, who promptly singled, scoring Williams to make it 3-1 Padres. A single and a walk to load the bases and Bochy would be on the mound to take the ball from VanRyn and give it to Dan Miceli. Ryan Klesko would line out for the second out, but Miceli couldn't get past Chipper Jones, who blasted the second pitch to deep center field for a grand slam to put the Braves ahead for good, 5-3.
After the Braves added a run to make it 6-3, the Padres would rally in the 9th. Steve Finley would drive home Mark Sweeney to make it 6-4. Kerry Ligtenberg would get Ed Giovanola to ground out to end the threat and the game.
News and Notes - Recent troubles in the bullpen have Dave Stewart riled up. Always the competitor, Stewart is joking with the staff that he will come out of retirement and take one of their roster spots.
