The visiting Cardinals struck for 6 runs in the 8th to blow open a scoreless game. 
After starting the inning with his 11th strikeout of the game, Joey Hamilton (3-6) suddenly lost his control, and allowed a hit, then issued back to back walks bring up big Mark McGwire, who just missed a grand slam, settling for a double, scoring 2. Looking gassed, Bochy had Hamilton issue an intentional walk to reload the bases for Brian Jordan. 

Bochy called on Brian Boehringer to stem the bleeding. He did not. back-to-back single scored 2 more each time, exploding the score to 6-0.

McGwire would get that home run, #26 of the season in the 9th to extend the Cardinal lead to 8-0. Ken Caminiti would single home Finley, then himself score on Greg Vaughn's 17th home run to avoid the shut out.



News and Notes - Hamilton's 11 strikeouts are a career high, previously he had 10 in a game on 3 different occasions. P Ben VanRyn selected by the Toronto Blue Jays off waivers.

  • P Sierra would make his MLB debut as a Padre in 1988. He would appear in 15 games, going 0-1 with a 5.70 ERA. He would be traded to the Cincinnati Reds in June of 1988.

Selected Scott Linebrink off waivers from the Houston Astros.

Purchased Steven Tolleson from the Oakland Athletics.
  • 2B/3B Tolleson would play at AAA Tuscon in 2011, being granted free agency after the season.
2012
Signed Jason Marquis as a free agent.
  • P Marquis would go on to make 35 starts as a Padre from 2012-2013. He would post a 15-12 record with a 4.5 ERA, with one complete game shut out in 2012. He was granted free agency after the 2013 season.
