THIS DATE IN PADRES BASEBALL

1998 SEASON
PADRES DROP 3 STRAIGHT FOR FIRST TIME THIS SEASON

DIAMONDBACKS 3 PADRES 2

Andy Ashby (5-4) goes the distance, but gets no offensive support in a 3-2 loss. After a Greg Vaughn 2 run shot in the second gave Ashby a brief 2-1 lead, Jay Bell would homer to tie until the 8th.

The winning run would score on a series of wild throws by Ashby, first on a pick off throw to first that went down the right field line sending David Dellucci to third. Then with 2 outs, Ashby would throw one to the back stop, allowing Dellucci to score from third with the winning run.

The Padres would get 2 hits in the second and only get 2 more the rest of the game.

News and Notes -  The first 3 game losing streak of the season reduced the Padre lead to 2 games, for their slimmest lead since April 14th.

PADRES FRANCHISE RECORD ON THIS DATE = 24-24 .500

Game 52 2008 - Padres 12 Reds 9 (18 innings)

First baseman Adrian Gonzalez hits three-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the 18th to give the Padres a 12–9 victory over Cincinnati. By innings, it is tied for the fifth-longest game in franchise history. At five hours and 57 minutes it is the fourth longest Padres game ever. Gonzalez, who has four of the Padres 18 hits and four RBIs, and second baseman Tadahito Iguchi set franchise records with nine at-bats in a game.

Game 45 2009 - Padres 9 @Diamondbacks 5

The Padres score a 9–5 win in Arizona for a 10th straight win, which is tied for the fifth-longest winning streak in franchise history.

Game 47 2012 - @Mets 6 Padres 1 - starting the longest losing streak of the season at 6 games

GAME OF THE DATE

Game 52 2019 - Padres 19 @Blue Jays 4

The Padres scored their first run three pitches in and kept scoring in every inning except the third and ninth, including multiple runs every inning from the fourth through the eighth. Their 19 runs were more than any Padres team had scored since a 20-7 victory over the Expos on May 19, 2001, in Montreal, which matched the team record for runs in a game.

Wil Myers and Ian Kinsler hit the Padres’ first back-to-back homers of the season in the second inning. Eric Hosmer and Hunter Renfroe would do it again in the eighth.

The Padres have won five games in a row for the second time this season, something they didn’t do once in 2018.
A team can’t count on 19 runs when it shows up to a ballpark. In fact, no major league team had scored that many in a game this season.
