PADRES SPLIT DAY/NIGHT DOUBLEHEADER
GAME 1 - PIRATES 5 PADRES 2
GAME 2 - PADRES 8 PIRATES 3
GAME 1
In the makeup game from a rain out in April, Andy Ashby (5-3) received no run support, and had a rough 7th inning, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits. The Padres would mount a mini-rally in the 9th, on a Wally Joyner double scoring Steve Finley, moving Tony Gwynn to third. Greg Vaughn would ground out to send Gwynn home for the 2nd Padre run. Closer Rich Loiselle would get Eddie Williams to ground out to end Game 1.
GAME 2
Sterling Hitchcock (2-0) would be a solid 6 2/3 innings allowing only 2 runs, as the offense supplied enough runs early before busting through for 4 in the seventh.
Greg Vaughn would knock a single to drive home Andy Sheets in the first, to give the Padres an early 1-0 lead. After tying it up in the 2nd, the Pirates had no answer for Sheets, who doubled for his second straight hit. He would move on to third before Eddie Williams sacrifice fly made it 2-1.
In the bottom of the 3rd, the Pirates responded with a home run from Jose Guillen to tie the game again, this time at 2. Vaughn would break the tie with a solo shot of his own in the 5th, to regain the lead 3-2.
In the 4 run 7th, the Padres would get some help from the Pirates, first by HBP to load the bases, bringing up Wally Joyner. He smacked a single to center to score 2, then a wild throw from LF Manny Martinez would bring home Vaughn for a 3 run play. Ruben Rivera then promptly doubled to left to score Joyner for the 8th and final run of the night for the Padres.
News and Notes - Ken Caminiti hit 2 home runs in a rehab start. He will make one more start, and if all is well, he will fly to Houston for the start of the series with the Astros.
