This Date In Padres Baseball - May 1

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON
PADRES LOSE IN 11

Marlins 6 Padres 5

In a back and forth battle, the hometown fish came up victorious on Edgar Renteria single to drive home Charles Johnson, who had earlier drawn the dreaded lead off walk, with 2 outs in the 11th inning off Dan Miceli (2-1)

Once up 3-1 thanks to a 2 RBI single by Wally Joyner and a Carlos Hernandez single in the 4th, the Padres quickly found themselves in a 5-3 hole. Kevin Brown, returning to Miami to get his 1997 World Series ring, couldn't hold the lead, allowing 3 runs in the 5th, and another in the 6th to extend the lead to 5-3.

But once again, the never-say-die 1998 Padres mounted a late game comeback, this time in the 9th. Against Florida closer Antonio Alfonseca, Wally Joyner and Greg Vaughn went back-to-back jack! Chris Gomez would double, bringing the go ahead run to second with one out. Manager Jim Leyland had seen enough and brought in Vic Darensbourg to keep the game tied. A weak pop up by James Mouton and a weak grounder by Quilvio Veras ended the Padres threat.

The Padres would load the bases in the 11th, but Steve Finley could not break out of his slump, popping out to first in the Padres last chance of the night.

News and Notes - When asked if he needed any additional motivation pitching against his former team, Brown joked, "Nah, the only person I recognize is Jimmy (Leyland) and the batboy. They got rid of everyone"
