The Padres punched back in the 2nd thanks to a single by Chris Gomez, scoring Wally Joyner and Greg Myers. Pete Smith helped himself in the 4th, driving home Greg Myers to make the game 3-1 Padres.
In the top of the 9th, Greg Vaughn tripled to score Ken Caminiti for an insurance run, giving Hoffman some breathing room.
