THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
PADRES lose
Cardinals 8 Padres 6
The Padres fall to 3-2 on the season, with a 8-6 loss to the Cardinals in St. Louis (3-1)
Tony Gwynn drove in Steve Finley in the top of the first, to put the Padres on top 1-0, but is thrown out trying to advance on the throw home to allow Kent Mercker (1-0) a chance to calm down.
Pete Smith (0-1) was able to strike out Mark McGwire, but couldn't set down Will McGee, who, with the bases loaded, grounded out to third, but weak enough to score Royce Clayton with the tying run. Clayton and McGee would each account for another run in the second and third inning to bring the Cardinals a 3-1 lead going to the 4th.
In the top of the 4th, the Padres clawed back for another run, this time via a Carlos Hernandez single, driving in Ken Caminiti
Smith battled through five, but with a 110 pitches, Bruce Bochy had seen enough and called to the bullpen for Don Wengert. Single-Single-Homerun (McGwire) and Bochy yanked Wengert. In came Sterling Hitchcock, who hit the first batter he saw, then a couple of hits to put this game nearly out of reach 8-2.
But the Padres, showing more fight than recent years, battled back with doubles by Wally Joyner and James Mouton to edge closer, 8-5.
Gwynn would connect for his second home run of the year in the top of the 8th, to bring the score to 8-6.
Kent Bottenfield would pitch 2 scoreless innings for his first save of the year.
