This Date In Padre Baseball - April 26

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON
PADRES BATS ASLEEP

PIRATES 6 PADRES 0

The Sunday finale after the marathon, 16 inning, game on Saturday proved too much for the Padres bats, as they were only able to collect 3 hits off Jon Lieber (1-3).  Kevin Brown (2-2) pitched well enough, allowing 3 runs on 10 hits, but most importantly, threw 8 innings to give the bullpen a much needed breather. Don Wengert gave up a 3 run HR to Al Martin in the 9th to make the final 6-0.

Tony Gwynn was back in the starting lineup, collecting 1 of the Padres' 3 hits.

News and Notes -  Wally Joyner sat out another game, although he said he could pinch hit if needed.

GAME OF THE DATE

Game 21 1974 - Padres 6 Phillies 2

In a 102 loss season, two bright spots, one being the start of  the longest win streak of the season starting and lasting just 5 games. The other was the MLB debut of Dave Freisleben.

Tossing a complete game, allowing only 4 hits and 2 runs on a HR to Del Unser in the 6th. Freisleben had dominated every level of competition since being drafted in the 5th round in 1971, he far exceeded expectations in his debut, in perhaps the best Padre debut of all time.
