THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
PADRES WIN MARATHON!
PADRES 4 PIRATES 3 (16 innings)
Tied at 3 after 5 innings, Bochy decision to go Johnny Wholestaff today seemed reasonable, but he didn't expect his bats to go quiet for 10 innings! Saying pregame that Sterling Hitchcock would toss 3, giving way to Donne Wall, called up today for this game, his pitching plan came together beautifully. Padre pitchers would only yield 7 hits and 4 walks across 16 innings of work. Unfortunately, the 17 Padre hits, couldn't bunch up enough to break the deadlock until the 16th.
After Carlos Reyes(1-0) pitched a perfect 16th, the 8th Pirate pitcher of the evening, Javier Martinez (0-1) would come on to see if he could extend the game. With one out, consecutive singles by Quilvio Veras and Mark Sweeney would set up Steve Finley for another game winning opportunity. Once again, Finley responds, smacking a single to center scoring the fleet footed Veras who was running on contact.
Most of the 53,710 in attendance stuck around for the entire 4 1/2 hour affair.
News and Notes - Tony Gwynn sat out another game nursing his knee. He did pinch hit in the 12th, singling in his only at bat. Donne Wall, just recalled from Vegas is part of the bullpen plan, despite being solely a starter in the minors.
