THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
PADRES WIN STREAK BROKEN
GIANTS 13 PADRES 7
The Padres (11-3) bats broke out again for a big 5 run first inning, but couldn't hold on, giving up 4 in the first themselves before giving up 7 more in the 5th.
Jumping all over Mark Gardner for 6 hits and 5 runs before he recorded an out in the first, the Friars looked to be cruising to their 9th consecutive win. Greg Vaughn broke out of his recent slump with a monstrous 3-run shot over the centerfield fence to make it 5-0.
Mark Langston would cough that big lead right back, allowing 2 walks and 2 hits, with the big damage coming on a 3-run homer by Charlie Hayes, cutting the Padres lead to 5-4.
Feeling good on the road, Vaughn would homer again in the 3rd, extending the Padre lead to 6-4. A Quilvio Veras single, scoring Archi Cianfrocco in the 5th would be the end of the Padres scoring, now leading 7-5.
Langston's 5th walk of the day, followed by a game tying HR by Barry Bonds, would be enough for manager Bruce Bochy. But the call to the pen was anything but relief as Brian Boehringer exploded, allowing 4 hits, walking 3 others in giving up 5 runs in only 2/3 of the inning.
The Padres bats then fell silent, not getting more than 1 runner on base in an inning the rest of the game, never really putting an pressure on the Giants bullpen.
News and Notes - The 8 game win streak was the longest since the 1982 Padres won 11 straight, which oddly would start this same date. This would tie a season high in runs allowed.
