As part of the "Paradise Series", the Padres trekked 12 hours from Pittsburgh to Hawaii, stopping over in San Diego to pick up half of the city it seemed.
But even with a a few plane loads of fans heading to the islands, the Padres had no answer in the scheduled double header before the ESPN televised game on Sunday.
Sterling Hitchcock would get no run support, throwing 8 strong innings, giving up one unearned run. That was all the Cardinals would need in Game 1.
Game 2 would not get brighter for the Friars in the Hawaii dusk. Alan Benes would toss a complete game, allowing only 3 hits, including a run scoring triple by Tony Gwynn in the 9th. Manager Tony LaRussa rolled the dice, allowing Benes to face Ken Caminiti and Greg Vaughn, inducing ground outs from both.

Signed Jody Reed as a free agent.
- 2B/SS Reed would play in 277 games from 1995-1996 for the Padres. Hitting .250 with 6 HR and 89 RBI. He would be traded to Detroit in March 1997.

Signed Billy Buckner as a free agent.
- P Buckner would appear in just 1 game for the 2014 Padres, a May 24 start versus the Chicago Cubs, giving up 3 runs in 6 innings for a 3-2 loss.
